Electrical discharge machining (EDM), also known as wire cutting and sinking, is a manufacturing process that uses controlled electrical discharges to remove material from a workpiece. This process is used to machine conductive materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, tungsten, titanium, bronze, brass, carbide and many others, particularly when complex shapes are involved or when materials are difficult to machine using traditional methods.

In EDM machining, the 0.006" or 0.010" brass wire and the workpiece are submerged in a dielectric liquid (either water or oil, depending on the process) to create an electrical circuit. By applying a voltage between the electrode and the workpiece, sparks form on the surface of the workpiece, causing thematerial to erode. This process is highly precise and enables fine details to be obtained, making it a suitable technique for the manufacture of complex parts and specific shapes.
